Albert Einstein once said, “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existence.” Two of Abbott’s top medical nutrition researchers have spent their careers questioning, and because of that innate curiosity, they have made major contributions to their field –creating widespread impact on the scientific community and in the field of medical nutrition.

The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) announced the induction of two of Abbott’s lead nutrition researchers, Rachael H. Buck, Ph.D., and Ricardo Rueda-Cabrera, MD, Ph.D. to its College of Fellows.

Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions awarded to medical and biological engineers. The College of Fellows is comprised of the top two percent of medical and biological engineers representing the most accomplished individuals in the fields of medical and biological engineering.

Membership in this elite class honors those who have made outstanding contributions through their research, practice, or education, and those who have made advancements in their field to bring about innovative approaches to bioengineering education.

Rachael H. Buck, PH.D.

Dr. Buck was nominated and elected by members of the College of Fellows for outstanding contributions developing scientifically proven infant formulas containing human milk oligosaccharides, or HMOs, previously only available to breast-fed infants.

As a director of pre-clinical research and a discovery scientist in the field of immune health, Dr. Buck has dedicated a significant portion of her career to conducting research to better understand the nutritional value of various components of breast milk.

Her work led Abbott’s team of scientists and nutritionists to develop infant formulas that are as close to breast milk as possible. Largely due to Dr. Buck’s research leadership and her body of work in the area of HMOs and breast milk research, Abbott led the industry as the first company to bring HMO innovation to infant formula. This innovation has allowed babies to have the important nutrition they need when breast feeding was not an option.

"This honor recognizes Abbott’s commitment to pioneering research that provides high value to our society. As dedicated scientists in the biomedical field, we appreciate AIMBE’s esteemed validation of Abbott’s life-changing innovations.”

Rachael H. Buck, Ph.D., & Ricardo Rueda-Cabrera, MD, Ph.D

Ricardo Rueda-Cabrera, MD, Ph.D.

Dr. Rueda-Cabrera was nominated and elected by members of the College of Fellows for outstanding contributions in development and commercialization of innovations on medical nutrition products and in external engagement with scientific community.

During his professional career, Dr. Rueda-Cabrera has made significant contributions through research on the impact of dietary components on beneficial health outcomes for people of all ages.

As the global leader of the mobility and metabolism science platform at Abbott, the research Dr. Rueda-Cabrera developed in collaboration with cross-functional teams has been critical to the success of key product launches around the world, including Ensure Plus Advance, Ensure Gold, and Glucerna Triple Care.

Some of the work Dr. Rueda-Cabrera has led includes extensive research of the role of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate, or HMB, in muscle health, a little-known compound that has been shown to help preserve muscle mass in healthy older adults. This research prompted Abbott to incorporate this unique ingredient in some of its adult nutrition products.

Also, as head of Scientific Affairs for the EMEA region, Dr. Rueda-Cabrera has collaborated with professional societies and institutions in Europe that provide research and services to help improve the health of society.

Thank you, Dr. Buck and Dr. Rueda-Cabrera, for your dedication to science, your commitment to Abbott and for the impact you’ve created in the lives of people around the world. Congratulations on being inducted into the AIMBE College of Fellows!

Optimizing Hydration for Athletes

Description

Water makes up two-thirds of the body's composition, and one way that humans lose water is through sweat, which is amplified during exercise. Sweat is more than just water. It also includes electrolytes, such as sodium, chloride, magnesium and potassium. These electrolytes help the body retain fluid, making them a crucial part of hydration for athletes.
